Running an organization often requires hardworking activists as well as a continuous source of funds. While our organization typically had a shortage of social workers, it had to face economic crises. To bolster the organization’s finances, various dedicated individuals like Capt Bahadur Singh Baral, Sub Giridhari Bisht, Maj Sundar Singh Khatri, Capt Manikishan Pradhan, Maj Hunarsingh Kanet, Lt Jagatsingh Khadka, Maj Shyamsingh Thapa, Capt Prithvidhwaj Limbu, and others made significant contributions. A remarkable achievement during Major Hukumsingh Gurung’s presidency (1972-78) was noteworthy in this direction.
When the organization reached its sixtieth year in November 1976, Major Hukumsingh Gurung led a delegation from our organization to meet the renowned Gorkha commander of the Azad Hind Fauj, Major Purnasingh Thakur, and his wife, extending a request for financial assistance to address our organization’s dire financial situation. In March 1978, the couple made an unforgettable contribution of 1 Lakh Rupees to our organization’s history.
Major Hukumsingh Gurung (Shyamnagar) (1911-1978) served as the chairman of our organization from April 1972 to December 1978. During his tenure, several significant events and actions took place, such as the establishment of Gorkha Bhawan in Shyamnagar when a government primary school in Shyamnagar was opened in 1972.
A room has been rented for the Brahmin community to discuss social improvement, with the District Soldiers’ Board’s assistance. Before this, there was mention of the government’s activities, and our cultural troupe was sent to the famous Dashain Mela in Kullu in 1973. The construction of Gorkha Bhawan in 1974, the effort to provide a free gymnasium for the families of Ex-Servicemen in 1976, the proposal to include the Nepali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution in 1976, and a request to the central government for the same, the installation of statues of Martyr Durgamalla and Martyr Dalbahadur Thapa, the purchase of books in Nepali, Hindi, and English for the organization’s library, the expansion of Nepali programs from Shimla to Nepal, a request to the government in 1977, the temple near Gorkha Bhawan in 1977, a donation of fifteen thousand rupees from Mr. Umeed Singh Bisht, and the establishment of the Peace Victory Trust Fund Committee in 1978. Every year, during the annual celebration, awards were distributed to outstanding students and young artists. Letters of congratulations were also sent from the organization to these eminent personalities.
Some noteworthy events include, on August 15, 1972, a memorable tribute to the freedom fighters on the occasion of India’s Independence Day, where they were honored with copper plaques, and a pension announcement was also made. Many of our freedom fighters were also honored with these awards.
In 1977-78, the Honorable Chief Minister Shri Shantakumar honored the widows of Martyr Durgamalla and Martyr Dalbahadur Thapa at local and state-level events. Their recognition and financial support are commendable.
In 1977, the then Prime Minister, Mr. Harka Bahadur Singh, also honored our representatives’ delegation with the Central Committee’s proposal for the inclusion of the Nepali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Major Hukumsingh Gurung served in the army from 1928 to 1963 and from 1964 to 1969. After returning home, he continued to serve society. In 1978, he was elected as the head of the Panchayat. He had been serving as the President of our organization since 1972. However, his sudden demise due to a brain hemorrhage occurred on December 19, 1978. He is always remembered for his dedication to social service.
After the passing of Major Hukumsingh Gurung, on February 21, 1979, Lt Jagatsingh Khadka was elected as the President for the fourth time. However, a few days before the election, in late January, the second joint trip of three days by Prof Indrabahadur Rai, President of the All India Nepali Language Committee, and his wife took place. In their presence, a branch of the Language Committee was formed here, with Lt Jagatsingh Khadka as the Chairman.
Lt Jagatsingh Khadka, S. B. O. B. I. (born in 1901), served as the President of the organization from 1979 to 1982, for approximately three years. During his presidency, he pushed for the backward class commission to be formally established to place our community in the “scheduled” category.
The committee received an invitation from the All India Bhasha Samiti, and in July 1979, twenty members from Bhagsu participated in the Mission of Peace on the birth anniversary of poet Bhanubhakta Acharya in Darjeeling. Even the widows of Durgamalla, Dalbahadur Thapa, and Mitrasen, as well as some young social workers, were part of this mission. In 1981, they conducted a campaign for the census to record Nepali as the mother tongue.
In the field of social service, the contribution of Lt Jagatsingh Khadka is unique. Even at the age of 90, he continued to be active and vigorous. From 1916 to 1941, he worked relentlessly in the social field. From around 1943 to 1947, he worked in the army and then retired on a pension. After returning home, he served as an official of the organization, first as a unit officer for one year and then as the Vice-President for ten years. He also served as a member of the Gram Panchayat Dari for twenty-two years, including twenty years as the Vice-Chairman. He was also the Vice-Chairman of Himachal Pradesh Ex-Servicemen’s League Kangra Unit, a member of the Kangra Hills Advisory Board (Punjab) for three years, Managing Director of the District Wholesale Society, and Managing Director of a bank at an advanced age. He was also an active as executive member of local temple committees.
He passed away at the age of 93 in the year 1994.

The influence of the pen sometimes reveals hidden emotions and touches the heart. On June 2, 1987, the annual cultural
convention of the Himachal and Punjab Gorkha Association was celebrated with enthusiasm in the District Council Hall,
Kangra Court. The then President of the Himachal and Punjab Gorkha Association, Subedar (Freedom Fighter) Shri
Charansingh Gurung, and the Chief Guest of that time, the Chief Minister, Shri Raja Virbhadra Singh, were present.
During the program, a letter of congratulations was presented to the Chief Guest, in which requests were made for the
installation of a half statue of martyr Durgamall and a Martyr Dal Bahadur Thpa Memorial Garden near the fairground of the village. The
poem was recited by poet and great writer Shri Magan Pathik in Hindi during the program.
The chief guest was deeply moved after hearing the poem and immediately announced with enthusiasm that he would
establish a committee for the installation of the half statue of martyr Durgamall and martyr Dal Bahadur Thapa in Shimla. These two Gorkha martyrs are not just Gorkha pride but the pride of our Himachal Pradesh and the entire country.
The committee was formed by the Himachal Pradesh government, with members including Mr. Kau, the District Magistrate of Dharamshala, two secretaries from the Himachal Pradesh government, Mr. Charansingh Gurung (Khanyara), the president of
our organization, and poet and writer Mr. Magan Pathik Gurung (Shyamnagar). The decision was also made to allocate land near the fairground of Paun Village, Dari.
During the years 1987 and 1992, while the construction of the half statues of martyr Durgamall and martyr Dal Bahadur Thapa was ongoing, the committee members and artists worked tirelessly. On February 21, 1993, the Himachal Gorkha
Development Council was established. The chief advisor to this martyr committee and also the chief advisor of the Himachal Gorkha Development Council was poet Shri Magan Pathik Gurung.
On October 22, 1992, during a visit to the Kashmir House residence of the Honorable Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Baliram Bhaktju, by the members of the committee, a poet from our organization, Mr. Magan Pathik Gurung, read a Hindi
poem in front of His Excellency. After listening to the poem, His Excellency, the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Baliram Bhaktju, announced that for the establishment of this work, I am giving one lakh rupees and that I will come
myself to inaugurate the unveiling of the statues of these martyrs on May 3, 1993. He came exactly on the same day and inaugurated the unveiling of the statues of the martyrs. Around one thousand people were present during the unveiling ceremony. During this unveiling, the establishment of the Himachal Gorkha Development Council were also simultaneously announced.
The journey of this unveiling of the martyrs’ statues, established by the Himachal Gorkha Development Council, has now reached a grandeur. This unveiling is remembered for the fact that at that time, when there was no government in power, the decision to establish such an unveiling was made. This led to the inauguration of the unveiling of the martyrs’
statues by His Excellency, the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Baliram Bhaktju, at the Shaheed Vatika in the village of Dari. This Vatika (garden) has now taken a magnificent form, and the responsible person behind this is the president of the Himachal Gorkha Development Council, Colonel Mahindra Singh Karki (Dari).
Formation of Language Committee
On March 1, 1992, President Mr. T. B. Sahi and Mr. Pahal Singh Chhetri (General Secretary) of the All India Language Committee visited Bhagsu as a part of their journey from Dehradun. Their original intention in coming to Bhagsu was to establish a language committee there. After much deliberation, it was decided that as an interim measure, H/Capt Pyar Singh Thapa (Branch President) (Dari), H/Capt Narayan Singh Thapa (Vice President) (Dari), Mr. Jagdish Singh Pradhan (Chilgari) as Secretary , Subedar Anand Singh Thapa (Sudher) as Treasurer, and Mr. Magan Pathik Gurung (Shyamnagar) as Convenor would be appointed. On November 28, 1992, a meeting of the All India Language Committee was held in Dehradun, in which Mr. Nar Bahadur Bhandari
(Sikkim), the then President of Khanera Branch, also participated. Congratulations were extended to all for the establishment of the language section.
A commemorative letter prepared by Mr. Magan Pathik (Gurung) was sent to the Indian government (about the Nepali language) and was included in the eighth report of India on the subject of India’s recognition. On August 20, 1992, Member of Parliament Mrs. Dil Kumari Bhandari passed it in Parliament. This is also a historic event in
itself. It will be understood by the future generations of His Excellency. Later, Mrs. Dil Kumari Bhandari also came to Bhagsu, greeted everyone and returned to Delhi with heartfelt blessings.
Memorable Assistance and Support:
The construction of Gorkha Bhavan’s temple and stage was facilitated with the assistance of Div Commader R. P. Singh, of the 33 Mountain Division, in 1992. This support is a memorable aid to the Gorkha community in building the structure.
Music Prize :
In the Master Mitrasen Memorial Music, a prize of Rs. 50,000/- was awarded to Freedom Fighter Captain Ram Singh Thakuri (March 21, 1993) by the Sikkim government (in Sikkim). This brought happiness to the Gorkha community residing all over India.
Formation of Gorkha Welfare Board:
This was established by the Himachal Pradesh government in 1996. Gorkha Certificate (Gorkha Association Shyamnagar, Dharamshala) is given. It is recognized by the Indian government for recruitment to the platoon.
Condolence Meeting:
Captain Ram Singh Thakuri (April 17, 2002) passed away in Lucknow. A condolence meeting was organized by the Gorkha Association in which 25 people attended.
On August 7, 2013, an earthquake struck Tirah Line, in the morning at 5 o’clock in a severe manner, affecting Bhuntegang as well. The administration declared it a danger zone and urged everyone to evacuate their homes. The relief fund, government, and other work were done here by the chief residents of each village. Moreover, the difficult work was
managed by the Relief Fund Government, and a place for settlement was provided by Mr. Sudhir Sharma, the local urban development minister, near the government quarter, close to Darnu village.
