Introduction
The Gorkhas, famously known as the Gurkhas, are a legendary group of warriors with a rich and illustrious history. Hailing from the mountainous region of Gorkha in present-day Nepal, the Gurkhas have earned a formidable reputation for their unwavering bravery, loyalty, and exceptional military skills. Where do the Gurkhas come from? Gurkhas are traditionally recruited from the hill people of Nepal, who trace their roots right back to an 8th century Hindu warrior, Guru Gorakhnath. They first encountered the British in 1814, when the British East India Company fought against them during the Anglo-Nepalese War.
Origins and Early History
The story of the Gorkhas dates back to the late 18th century when a powerful leader named Prithvi Narayan Shah embarked on a mission to unify various small kingdoms and create a unified Nepal. Born in 1723, Shah hailed from the Shah dynasty, and it was under his leadership that the region of Gorkha gained prominence. Prithvi Narayan Shah and his successors not only established Gorkha as a significant kingdom but also laid the foundation for the formation of a formidable fighting force, which would later be known as the Gurkhas.
The Gurkhas in the British Army
The reputation of the Gurkhas as exceptional warriors reached the ears of the British East India Company, which sought to recruit them into their military ranks. In 1814, following the conclusion of the Anglo-Nepalese War, the Treaty of Sugauli was signed, resulting in the recruitment of Gurkhas by the British. Since then, the Gurkhas have become an integral part of the British Army, serving with honour and distinction in numerous conflicts around the world.
The Gurkhas have left an indelible mark on military history, particularly during World Wars I and II. In the trenches of Europe, the Gurkhas displayed unparalleled bravery, earning the respect and admiration of their comrades and adversaries alike. Their unwavering loyalty, fearlessness in battle, and distinctive khukuri knife have become synonymous with the Gurkha ethos.
Modern ERA
In recent times, the Gurkhas have continued to serve as an elite force, not only in the British Army but also in the Indian Army, the Singapore Police Force, and various other military and law enforcement agencies around the world. Their selection process is rigorous, with only the most exceptional candidates being chosen to bear the esteemed title of a Gurkha.
The Gurkhas’ unparalleled dedication and valour have been recognized with numerous awards, including the prestigious Victoria Cross, the highest military honour in the British Commonwealth. These brave warriors have not only defended their homelands but have also made significant contributions to the countries they have served, earning the respect and admiration of all who have had the privilege to witness their remarkable prowess on the battlefield.
